Merrick followed Gemma into her apartment carrying the box of ornaments the lodge had lent to the school for the play. It was the first time any man had ever been in this room by invitation since she took over the lodge. “Just set the box on the sofa.” She went into the kitchen before she added then get out to her sentence. Gemma didn’t want to be rude. The only time she’d ever managed it was when she was

upset. Then she lost all control and said things she didn’t mean, half the time.

She did want him to leave, though. Just his presence in her living room made her whole apartment seem smaller.

Poking her head through the kitchen doorway, she glanced out at him as he surveyed the room.

She hadn’t bothered to redecorate and the apartment had a seventies kind of look to it.

Thank God it didn’t have shag carpeting though.

“Would you like something to drink, a cup of coffee, maybe?”

He looked up from the ancient console TV and smiled. “A cup of coffee would be great.”

Her lips trembled as she smiled back. She should ask him to leave. Nothing good would come of his staying in her rooms. If she wasn’t careful he’d have her naked and beneath him in no time and she wouldn’t even put up a fight.

“Coffee it is.”

She pulled a piece of pie from the refrigerator, cut it in half and set the pieces on the table with the sugar and cream. When there was nothing left to do but wait for the coffee to brew, she stood staring out the window over the sink into the darkness.

Gemma jumped and couldn’t hold back a scream when strong arms slid around her when Merrick pressed his hard body against her back 69
